Jeanie Lawrence, professional artist, specializes in creating paintings on silk. Much of her art takes the form of beautiful silk scarves. Each silk scarf or painting is individually handcrafted.

Various methods are used in making a beautiful scarf. To create a picture, the design is first drawn on a white scarf using a vanishing ink pen. Then the scarf is stretched on a frame and the design traced over with gutta (a resist which prevents the dye from spreading.) When the gutta is dry, the shapes of the flowers, leaves or animals are painted in. After completing the design, the background is filled in. Depending on the amount of detail, the painting can take around 10 hours. Other methods include painting the white scarf all over with dyes, then outlining freehand with gutta and painting again with darker shades.

When the painting is dry, the scarf is air dried for 24 hours before being rolled in newsprint and kraft paper and steamed for 4 hours. Following the steaming, the scarf is again air dried for 24 hours before being dry cleaned to remove the gutta. The final process is washing in a softening agent.

Each gorgeous scarf is unique. Wear and enjoy.
